Northampton, originally called “Hamm Tun” is particularly famous for the history of its shoe industry. The Museum & Art Gallery hold one of the largest collections of shoes in the world.
Northampton became known for its quality shoe making when in 1649 they obtained a contract to make 2,500 shoes for Oliver Cromwell’s parliamentary army. Additionally, in WW1 the shoemakers of Northampton supplied over two-thirds of the 70 million pairs of footwear required!
