History of Towcester

Towcester is a gorgeous historical town in the south of Northamptonshire, and Salcey Cabinet Makers have been based here on Watling Street for almost 25 years. We have served this local community over many years; providing handmade bespoke furniture and bespoke fitted kitchens.

Towcester is the oldest town in Northamptonshire and has been continuously settled in since the Middle Stone Age. However, it was the Romans that established this area as a town and named it “Lactodurum”.

It wasn’t until the 18^th and early 19^th centuries that Towcester really began to flourish. Watling street was a major coaching road between London and Holyhead. Because of this, the town became a popular stopping point for these long journeys.

The Saracens Head, a pub and hotel in Towcester, was even mentioned in Charles Dickens’ book: “The Pickwick Papers”.

Today, there are many lovely places to visit here in Towcester. They include the Museum, many high street shops, Towcester Mill Brewery, and some gorgeous cafes. In the past, we have designed and handmade bespoke tables and chairs for one of these lovely tearooms.
